The Virtual World
When one thinks of education, chances are that virtual reality is not something that immediately comes to mind. In recent years, online learning and teaching have changed the face of education, by becoming a supplement to traditional methods, allowing learners to study through distance education, at their own time, pace and pace. Online teaching has become a powerful tool for educators to expand their accessible population of learners while providing learners with a way to get an education without having to step foot into a classroom.
But let’s look at another aspect of the virtual world, namely the world of avatars and games, and what it means.
What does the virtual world mean in the modern world?
A virtual world is a computer-simulated representation of a world with specific characteristics, in which learners of virtual environments interact via representations of themselves called “avatars.” While there are no significant age or other demographic differences between adults who visit virtual worlds and those who do not, teens are significantly more likely to visit virtual worlds. One in 10 teens and 11 percent of teen gamers reported visiting virtual worlds (PEW Research Centre Dec 7, 2008). How should one explain the difference between virtual reality and the real world? The virtual world actually has the same physical structure as the real world because it simulates the real one.
Why is Virtual Reality (VR) bad?
There are growing concerns about subtler health effects such as headaches, eyes being strained, dizziness and nausea after using headsets. Such symptoms can be triggered by the VR illusion. Virtual Reality may create only artificial environments, in which the brains don’t create a mental map of real ones. Is social media a virtual world? It is a form of virtual reality. The child can portray a version of him/herself, but that representation isn’t exactly him/her. The question sometimes posed, is if VR is bad for children’s eyes? There is actually no reliable evidence that Virtual Reality headsets cause permanent deterioration in eyesight in children or adults. On the other hand, wearable technology like VR headsets could potentially expose the child to harmful electromagnetic frequency radiation. These headsets work together with cell phones and can wirelessly connect to Wi-Fi, which means that they too emit radiation, and could, in fact, pose long-term health risks.
Spending more than the recommended 30 minutes in Virtual Reality could cause the child to lose spatial awareness of the room around him/her, and makes it more difficult to identify where things are in the physical world, from inside your headset. The last question posed is; What is Augmented versus Virtual Reality? Augmented reality, merges the virtual and real worlds together. Users can interact with virtual content in the real world through images, videos, and models.
Virtual and augmented reality can help children connect with each other and improve their communication skills.
